This extension constituted  Phase 1 & 2  of a 3 Phase project. The existing property is a single storey traditional style end of terrace cottage, in a four cottage terrace of holiday homes located beside the beach. The client brief was renovation of existing cottage (Phase 1) and extension (Phase 2). Flexibility of use was the main criteria of the brief.

The proposed new extension  is a shallow dual aspect plan form to match existing cottage width, with height to match existing ridge line. Simple forms are used  to compliment the existing without  being a pastiche addition .

Materials used are low or zero maintenance  that can withstand a harsh seaside environment. Zinc  was proposed for roofing & cladding , combined with triple glazed colour matched aluclad windows & sliding screens. Paving is granite.

Internal spatial arrangements allow for flexibility of use  to maximize restricted space.

Each building has a kitchenette, WC/shower room, living / dining space  & one  double bedroom ,in addition ,bunk house design is used in the renovation of the existing cottage & mezzanine sleeping lofts are created in the roof space of the new extension.

The courtyard arrangement created by rotating the extension at 90 Degrees to the existing cottage and glazed link that can be open or closed  allows flexibility of use as each building could be occupied by different groups or families or by one large extended family.
